First encounter and first impressions
This is the moment when Magwitch meets Pip, who is still a child. In this scene, Magwitch tries to convince Pip to give him food and a file without telling anyone.
To make sure Pip does it, he invents a story about a young man, who hunts kids, kills them, and eats their heart. To make it credible he starts adding details explaining how this young man can find Pip no matter what he does to hide. With this, he gets to scare him. But Magwitch also wants to make sure Pip comes back. If Pip is too scared, he might run away and never return. To prevent this, Magwitch pretends to be protecting Pip from the young man. He tells Pip that he is holding the young man back but needs the things he asked for to continue protecting him. This makes Magwitch seem less like a threat and more like someone Pip can trust and help.
In this passage Magwitch appears to be a cruel and manipulative man that uses fear to control Pip. However, later in the story we can see that this was an especial moment for Magwitch and he gets attached to him. In gratitude for Pip’s help he dedicates everything he has to give him a better life, making him a gentleman.
This event shows us that the first impressions can be wrong. Abel Magwitch, who seemed like a dangerous criminal, ended up being a kind and generous man, who becomes Pip’s benefactor.
Can fear be an effective way to control someone? Have you ever seen someone using it in our society?
Does kindness always come from who we expect or sometimes it comes from unexpected people?
I think that fear is an effective way to control someone's thoughts and actions. In our society, biased forms of media are a way of inciting fear to their viewers. For example, propaganda can be used to control society by stimulating fear to their audience. Kindness may come from both the expected and unexpected. Sometimes the expected outcome may be reversed; the expected are unkind and the unexpected are kind.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the message that first impressions can be wrong. Recently, I was leaving a gas station after refilling my tank when the person behind me began honking. I assumed that they had a problem with my driving, and it made me frustrated. However, when the other driver approached my window, she informed me that I left my fuel tank door open. What I perceived to be an impatient driver was actually someone trying to help me. This was extremely embarrassing and taught me to think harder before I judge.
ReplyDeleteShould fear be effective as manipulation? No. But in our society, fear is a tactic. A tactic used by people to ultimately get what they want. There have been cases, conspiracy or proven factual, that our government has even used fear to get U.S. Citizens or even other countries to get what they want. Kindness can be as simple as a smile on a stranger's face or a friend celebrating an achievement with you. Kindness is for whoever decides to exude it.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea that Magwitch invented a story to scare but not too much is interesting. I think fear, to an extent, can be an affective way to control someone because it makes them fear you just enough to do what you say. Kindness can come from all different kinds of people. The people we don't expect to be kind can often be the kindest.
ReplyDeleteI love your analysis and your thoughts on this passage. I believe fear can be very effective to gain control, but it shouldn't be used in that way. Fear is often used to control our current society, and I believe it can be harmful and hide the truth. Though it may have worked out for Pip in the end, this tactic can easily go too far.
